What Is BMI and How Is It Calculated?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's height and weight, used as a screening measure for underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity in adults. It was developed by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 19th century and later adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a standard metric for population health assessment.
BMI Formula
There are two equivalent formulas depending on measurement system:
- Metric: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)
- Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) ÷ height² (inches²)
WHO BMI Classification for Adults
| BMI Range | Category | Health Risk |
|---|---|---|
| < 18.5 | Underweight | Malnutrition, bone density loss |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal weight | Lowest risk |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight | Moderate increased risk |
| 30.0 – 34.9 | Obese Class I | High risk |
| 35.0 – 39.9 | Obese Class II | Very high risk |
| ≥ 40.0 | Obese Class III (Severe) | Extremely high risk |
Additional Metrics Explained
- BMI Prime: Your BMI divided by 24.9 (the upper normal limit). A value of 1.0 = top of normal range. Above 1.0 = overweight or obese.
- Ponderal Index (PI): weight (kg) ÷ height³ (m³). More accurate than BMI for very tall or very short individuals.
- Ideal Weight Range: The weight range that places you within the normal BMI category (18.5–24.9) for your specific height.
BMI Limitations
- Does not distinguish fat mass from muscle mass — athletes may be classified as overweight
- Does not assess fat distribution — central obesity carries higher cardiovascular risk than peripheral
- Less accurate in older adults who have lost muscle mass (sarcopenic obesity)
- Ethnic-specific thresholds exist: many Asian guidelines use BMI ≥23 as overweight and ≥27.5 as obese
- Not applicable during pregnancy or for children (use growth chart percentiles)
