What Is BMI and How Is It Calculated?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's height and weight, used as a screening measure for underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity in adults. It was developed by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 19th century and later adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a standard metric for population health assessment.

BMI Formula

There are two equivalent formulas depending on measurement system:

  • Metric: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)
  • Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) ÷ height² (inches²)

WHO BMI Classification for Adults

BMI RangeCategoryHealth Risk
< 18.5UnderweightMalnutrition, bone density loss
18.5 – 24.9Normal weightLowest risk
25.0 – 29.9OverweightModerate increased risk
30.0 – 34.9Obese Class IHigh risk
35.0 – 39.9Obese Class IIVery high risk
≥ 40.0Obese Class III (Severe)Extremely high risk

Additional Metrics Explained

  • BMI Prime: Your BMI divided by 24.9 (the upper normal limit). A value of 1.0 = top of normal range. Above 1.0 = overweight or obese.
  • Ponderal Index (PI): weight (kg) ÷ height³ (m³). More accurate than BMI for very tall or very short individuals.
  • Ideal Weight Range: The weight range that places you within the normal BMI category (18.5–24.9) for your specific height.

BMI Limitations

  • Does not distinguish fat mass from muscle mass — athletes may be classified as overweight
  • Does not assess fat distribution — central obesity carries higher cardiovascular risk than peripheral
  • Less accurate in older adults who have lost muscle mass (sarcopenic obesity)
  • Ethnic-specific thresholds exist: many Asian guidelines use BMI ≥23 as overweight and ≥27.5 as obese
  • Not applicable during pregnancy or for children (use growth chart percentiles)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy BMI for adults?+
For adults aged 20 and older, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy per WHO guidelines. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above falls in the obese category. These thresholds apply to most populations, though some Asian countries use lower cut-offs (overweight at BMI ≥23).
Is BMI accurate for muscular people and athletes?+
No — BMI is a poor indicator of health for athletes and highly muscular individuals. Muscle weighs significantly more than fat, so a rugby player or bodybuilder may have a BMI in the overweight or obese range despite having very low body fat. For such individuals, body fat percentage, DEXA scan, or waist-hip ratio provides a more accurate picture of health risk.
How is BMI calculated differently for children?+
For children and teenagers (ages 2–19), BMI is calculated using the same formula but interpreted using age- and sex-specific growth chart percentiles rather than fixed adult cut-offs. A BMI below the 5th percentile is underweight, 5th–84th is healthy, 85th–94th is overweight, and 95th or above is obese. Use our Growth Chart Percentile tool for paediatric assessment.
What is BMI Prime?+
BMI Prime is a dimensionless ratio of your BMI to the upper limit of the normal range (24.9). A BMI Prime of 1.0 exactly means you are at the top of the healthy weight range. Values below 0.74 indicate underweight, 0.74–1.0 is healthy, and above 1.0 indicates overweight or obesity. It makes cross-population comparisons easier when different BMI thresholds are used (e.g. Asian cut-offs).
Does this BMI calculator store my data?+
No. All calculations happen entirely within your browser. No weight, height, age, or any personal data is transmitted to any server or stored anywhere. You can verify this by using the calculator while offline — it works exactly the same. Your data is completely private to you.
